Licence for RefWorks expires at the end of 2024

From the end of 2024, you will no longer be able to use the RefWorks reference management programme free of charge via the SuUB Bremen campus licence.

How can you continue to work with your RefWorks literature citations?

You can transfer the literature you have collected in RefWorks to other literature management programmes. However, the folder structure you used in RefWorks and the uploaded PDF files cannot be transferred. To save your literature citations from RefWorks, select "References > Export" in the RefWorks menu and export the references in "Bibliographic Software (Endnote, Reference Manager, ProCite)" format.

Unfortunately, references and bibliographies that you have inserted into your Word document with RefWorks cannot be edited further with another reference management programme in Word (exception: if you switch to Citavi, see "Editing Word documents with Citavi").

Which programmes can you use instead of RefWorks?

If you are a member of the University or the Universities of Applied Sciences in Bremen, the library will provide you with alternative literature management solutions (Citavi, Endnote and Zotero) and offer you help with their use.

Citavi: The following instructions are available for switching to Citavi:

•     Importing data from RefWorks
•     Editing Word documents edited with Refworks with Citavi

However, the client version of Citavi is not available for Mac devices. Apple devices can be used with Zotero, for example.

Why was the licence cancelled?

Over the last few years, the use of RefWorks has decreased considerably compared to the other reference management programmes provided by the library.
