Lending and interlibrary loans

Self-checkout

Lending

You will need a SuUB Library Card to borrow books from the library. Please use the self-checkout facilities to borrow books. Registered users are assigned a personal library account, which provides a detailed overview of due dates, reservations etc.

Lending periods

The standard lending period for books is 4 weeks. The lending period for items borrowed from our Media Center is 2 weeks.
Please check your library account regularly to review the due dates of any items checked out to your account.

Non-circulating stock

Some of our holdings are not available for borrowing and can only be used on site at the SuUB (this includes journals, reference works etc). These items are clearly designated in our catalog.

Renewals

You can renew individual items up to eight times. Items which have not been reserved by other users can be renewed online through your personal library account.

Reservations

If you need a book which is currently on loan to another user, you may place a reservation on the item. We will notify you by e-mail as soon as the item becomes available.

Requesting items from the closed stacks

Roughly 3/4 of our print holdings are stored in our closed stacks and cannot be accessed directly. These items are designated in our catalog and can be ordered online. You can find the request button next to the shelf mark in the catalogue (via the shopping cart symbol).

Requesting titles from our branch library in Bremerhaven

If you require access to books held at our branch library in Bremerhaven, you can request that they be delivered to the Central Library on the university campus in Bremen.

If you require books or articles that are not available at the State and University Library or any of the other libraries in Bremen, you may order these items through the interlibrary lending service of the Common Union Catalog (GVK).

  • You will need to set up an interlibrary account through our Lending Desk. Download a registration form here. Interlibrary accounts are operated on a credit basis.
  • Delivery times: 5 - 10 working days.
  • A service charge of €1.50 applies per order; further costs may apply for the copying of longer articles.
  • All items are delivered to the Central Library.
  • You will receive a notification by e-mail when your order arrives.
  • Orders can be collected from our Lending Desk

If you are unable to locate the items you require through the GVK interlibrary service, or if it is not possible to order these items online, please contact the staff at our Central Information Desk or the Interlibrary Services Department for assistance.

Tip: If we don't have the book you need, or if there are too few copies available, you are welcome to recommend the title for acquisition and we will try to acquire it for you as quickly as possible.
