December 2018

The library's e-journal holdings will change in 2018.

Since 2016, the German Rectors' Conference has been negotiating with major scientific publishers on behalf of the Alliance of German Science Organisations  as part of the DEAL project.

DEAL aims at nationwide licensing agreements for the entire portfolio of e-journals published by the major scientific publishers.

The financial burden of the individual scientific libraries is to be reduced by means of nationwide consortium agreements. Access to scientific literature is to be improved on a broad and sustainable level. At the same time, an open access feature is to be implemented.

Negotiations are being conducted with these publishers:

  • Elsevier - Elsevier
  • Springer Nature
  • Wiley

State of negotiations:

SpringerNature:

  • No change in access to e-journals
  • additional content
  • Palgrave and Nature subscriptions continue to run

Wiley: No change in access to e-journals

Elsevier (Science Direct): no arrangement for 2018 so far

SuUB has not renewed its contract with Elsevier, which expires at the end of 2017.
For this reason, the new articles of previously subscribed journals will no longer be available from January 2018 onwards. In addition to the subscribed titles, there will also be no access to approximately 1000 other Elsevier journals, which could be accessed under the previous contract (Freedom Collection).

By the end of 2016, more than 60 universities and academic institutions had already terminated their contracts with Elsevier in order to confirm their support for a DEAL licence. By the end of 2017 there are about 200 institutions; a list of them can be found here....

On 29th December Elsevier informed us that the access to the journals subscribed to until the end of 2017 won't be cut off immediately.

DEAL negotiation goals:

  • All institutions participating in DEAL have permanent full-text access to the entire portfolio of e-journals of the respective publishers.
  • All publications of authors from German institutions are automatically published via open access (CC-BY, including peer review).A
  • Appropriate pricing according to a simple, future-oriented calculation model based on the volume of publications.
